Roof repair

I gave a buddy of mine some help repairing his roof. It had been leaking for some time, but he lacked both the funds and knowledge to do the job. Recently he’d been given some roofing materials and I had a free afternoon to show him what to do. My years of doing much with little come in handy now and then.

Whoever installed the roof cut corners that should not be cut. They skipped a couple rows of shingles near the ridge pole. A poorly designed and installed roof vent sorta kinda almost covered it. Over time things shifted a bit and roof vent efficiently channeled water directly into the room below.

With only a little more time and a few dollars more spent on materials, the contractor could have done a good job. Instead, he left behind something destined to fail early. Whatever happened to taking pride in one’s job?

  2. It's called being a craftsman. We don't seem to have them anymore. It's a shame because when the SHTF, we are going to need them. These kids taking useless Liberal Arts courses in college are going to be the first ones to go down. What ever happened to the FFA or vo tech schools?

    1. I've got a Liberal Arts degree, but I get your point.

  3. The term "work ethic" doesn't exist anymore. Finding an honest electrician, plumber, etc. is damn near impossible.

    1. Which is why I do most of my own work. However, I did find an honest mechanic. He's not cheap, but does good work.

  4. Pride has been replaced by greed. But hey, they're just following the example set by our "leaders"...

    1. Not much sense in being a "follower" now is there?

  5. When our leaders begin to act like third world leaders the people will follow and do just as crappy of job. The phone system will crumble then power grid... and of course roofs will leak.

    1. We do seem to be slipping into a third world mindset.

  6. Pride has gone the way of most other values in this country. Those who insist on doing the job right command the respect of some and the disdain of most who are corrupt and lazy.

    1. Even so, I think there are still a lot of people who would do the right thing if given half a chance.

  7. I did my own roof one time with the help of a buddy. It was very satisfying knowing you did it yourself. Now I am getting a little too old for a lot of things I used to do with ease.

    1. Roofing is a tough job. Maybe I should redo mine before I get too much older. :)

  8. That sucks, it is indeed one of the biggest pet peeves I have as a home owner, I specialize in one thing, that means if I'm paying you to do YOUR specialty to MY home, I would expect you to put 125% into the job like I would...

  9. Whoa, that’s upsetting! It’s a good thing that you were there when your friend needed help. Roofing problems are tough because they can affect the whole foundation of the house. Luckily, that particular situation hasn’t happened
