Old contacts

While rummaging around my office the other day, I came across my old PDA, a Palm TX. They were pretty common at one time, before everything became available on people’s phones.

Just for grins and giggles, I charged it up to see if it still worked. The device worked fine. One of the features was an address book. Looking through the old addresses I saw a lot of what I expected: addresses and phone numbers are now out of date. People move. Land lines are done away with in favor of cell phones. That didn’t surprise me.

Two things really did hit home. Quite a few of the couples are no longer couples. Divorce is common, but you don’t really notice it day by day. It wasn’t all that many years ago that I used the PDA on a daily basis. The other surprise was the number of people who’ve died. They will never answer my call ever again. Maybe that’s just a side effect of getting older, but I don’t have to like it.

On the positive side is all the new friends I’ve made who weren’t around then to list. Some friends feel like they’ve been around forever, but they aren’t in the old lists. Life goes on.

  1. And so it goes. I like to think that I'm not that old. Yet, when I look back, a lot of my classmates have moved on to another realm. As for technology. I never owned a PDA and only use my cell phone to send and receive calls. The kids at work find that amazing.

    1. The PDA was a good tool for the time -one I no longer need. I've a $10 pre paid cell phone that I share with my wife. There's no cell service here so why bother with more?

  2. I carry the smart aspect of my phone on top of my shoulders everyday. My brain gets to decide as to whether ta answer that simple phone call or not. I also am text and I-Pod free let alone a smart phone lol.
    Good nuf for me

MU4-3067. That's my old phone number from the 50's. It was a 3 person party line. I know my new one, but everyone else is on my contact list on my cell phone. And I'm to blame for that. Pathetic, I know.....

    1. It's easy to get used to the contact list on a cell phone.

  4. Remember the little black address books, tiny ones, that required the use of a number two pencil...high tech indeed.

    1. Indeed I do. We actually have a slightly larger version with everything written down. I don't trust electronic storage.

  5. When I went to college a computer took up a huge AC cooled room and spit out punch cards. My first handheld calculater was called a slide rule.

    1. Slide rules are amazing. Only problem you actually have to understand math to use one. When my father-in-law worked for IBM as a chemist, he could check if a reaction was working properly faster on the slide rule than the wiz kids could on the computer.

  6. Seems like things are changing faster than I can keep up with!

It's always a sad shock to be reminded that some old friends are no longer with us. The number seem to get bigger all the time!

    Part of life, I reckon!
