Brush with mortality

Life goes on. One day follows the other. Years go by and then something happens. A friend of mine was telling me the story of his 44 year old co-worker. The guy had been living with his wife for many years and they had a daughter together.

One day, totally out of the blue, the guy had a heart attack. Fortunately, emergency medical personal were nearby. He received excellent emergency treatment, plus the hospital immediately dealt with his problem. The guy made a 100% recovery. Soon he was back at work. Everything looked fine.

However, a brush with mortality can change a person. In my friend's words, the guy had no more f**ks to give. The opportunity came up to have an affair with a 22 year old at work so he did. They got caught at work. The guy lost his job, his wife, custody of his kid, and the house. Now he has to make payments on the house he doesn't live in out of his unemployment check.

I can how how that sort of thing can happen. Nothing like a near death experience to reevaluate one's life. That's totally valid. We get into ruts and sometimes something major causes us to want to make major life changes. That may be the case, but there are certainly better ways to do it.

Maybe he should have just gotten a sports car or a motorcycle?

  2. Same thing happened to me the day before my birthday back in mid March. Just what I always wanted. A stent for my birthday. Instead of an affair I decided to hit the trout stream at least once a week and by myself a few new shooters...........

  3. He was thinking with the wrong head. Would have been better off with a motorcycle.

    1. Indeed. We men are not all that clever sometimes. (Okay, most times)

  4. Man was an idiot for risking what he had with his wife for sex with a stranger. Did the fling or his wife help him recuperate from his heart attack ? And what his daughter thinks of him now - was that worth it ? A real shame.

I've been there sorta. Had a heart valve replacement (born with the defect which HAD to be replaced). Scary thing having your heart turned off so they can tinker with it. And the recovery is no picnic - a small cough feels like a punch in the chest. Takes time and you feel like such a burden on the people around who take care of you.

So when you get better, you take the time to make sure you are a better person for it. You thank the people who helped you out. Not having an affair.

    1. He was a fool.

It seems people go one of two ways. One direction they are thankful, grateful, and realize they could have lost it all. The other way is that some people just go crazy.

I've known him since I was 15yrs old.
When I first heard the news they did not say his name. I briefly thought it might be him as they said it was in Lincoln but I dismissed it.. naah it could not be. I learned this weekend it was him indeed. His wife is mom's best friend.
