Adventures at the DMV

Ah yes, the Department of Motor Vehicles. How many people love to visit the friendly folks down to the DMV?

It occurred to me that my driver's license was going to expire when I was going to be about 2000 miles from home. With that in mind, I went into the DMV to see what could be done about it.

My local DMV just moved into a new office so it was my first time at the new location. There were only two people staffing the place. That's fine as I was their only customer. The ladies pleasantly explained to me that I could renew my license up to 6 months early. They gave me a simple one page form to fill out.

$55 and a quick eye test later and I walked out with a new license. No fuss. No muss. Isn't it nice when a government office works the way it's supposed to?

It's usually pretty easy to find fault with government services, so I think it should be noted when they do something right.

  2. But why should it cost $55?
It could be as little as $5 but renewing your license is another opportunity for the government to make money out of you. Another opportunity to tax the user.
It's the same the world over. And you can't do anything about it...

    1. I could drive or not drive. At least NH doesn't have any sales or income tax.

    1. Actually, that's the kind of service I expect around here from the local agencies. My town clerk is pretty decent too.

  4. When i read the title I thought another tale of obtruse bureaucracy. But no!Pleasantly surprised there are some nice efficient people still. Downside of course is the cost. Ah well someone has to pay for the glitz of government!

    1. The license is good for a few years so the cost per year isn't all that bad.

One thing I've noticed about dealing with government agencies. If you can deal with them as people it's usually pleasant. When they put on a big "official" mask it goes downhill fast.

  5. Didn't have to go to Motor Vehicle for renewal this year with 6 different forms of ID if they could use the picture from the last one. Just sent in the $24.00 and it came a week later in the mail.

  6. Veterans get free drivers licenses in Georgia, and you renew on line these days. I can remember going to the DMV and standing in line for ages, only to face some surly "public servant." I like this way better.

    1. I think there are on-line renewal options once one reaches a certain age in NH. I have no patience for surly public servants.
