Fear and hate

I’m really sick of politicians trying to manipulate me through fear and hate. I’m certainly not going to put up with it from clergy. While I consider myself a spiritual person, organized religion and I tend to not get along.

My lovely wife, on the other hand, used to really enjoy going to the local church. She had a lot of friends there, loved church music and enjoyed a good sermon. The most recent pastor has been slowly drifting into positions of intolerance and hate.

Once in a while I used to accompany my lovely wife to church, but that had to stop. It was all I could do to keep from shouting out from the pew and calling him out on his BS. It’s bad enough that his theology was questionable, but twisting history and science to fit his prejudices was beyond the pale. Since I was not officially a member of the church anyway, I thought it best to just not go.

As it is, my lovely gentle wife once walked out on his sermon and slammed the door. She did not hesitate to tell people why she left either. After that, the pastor toned things down, but now he’s back to his old self, and then some.

Most of the congregation has slowly drifted away. There are a hard core few who buy into the fear and hate and encourage the pastor. My lovely wife figured that pastors come and pastors go. She could wait this one out. After last Sunday’s hate filled sermon, she’s decided to wait for a new pastor from outside the church. Enough is enough.

Whatever happened to peace, love and understanding?

  2. Peace, love, and understanding work well until you have to deal with hate, prejudice and violence.

I've never meshed well with the Christian religion. It's like gun control - it would work if you could take all the guns from all the people everywhere, without regards to position.

I guess that's why the Vikings ruled for centuries and the Catholic Irish dealt with centuries of occupation. Even today, 50% of the Icelandic gene pool is Viking.

I, too, walked out of an Eastern KY Pentacostal service for the exact reason as your lovely wife.

I practice peace love and understanding, but have no qualms about meeting their opposite head on.

    1. And you nailed the political M.O.! There are TERRORISTS everywhere! Of course most of them have a secondary label of "politician", "police officer", "IRS employee", and "TSA Agent".

And before I get blasted, I'm a former fed so familiar with both sides of that pasture fence.

The most terrifying words ever? "I'm here from the government and I'm here to help you." :P

  3. Despite being what I consider to be a devout Christian, I have to say that "churches" have never exactly been bastions of peace, love and understanding. That's why I'm not currently attending any.

    1. That's generally been the problem with most churches.... they have people in them.

  4. God example is lacking, let alone his word, in most churches which is ONE reason I don't attend.

  5. My hubby jewish our only child adhears to peace, love and understanding..me I think the Buddhist view of Karma is essentially the way to live..why can't ministers lead their parishes and congregations to love and peace, joy and clamness. Was born and babptized a roman catholic, then joined the episcopal church still love their interpretations and peacefulness I don't drive hard to get to church, but I pray daily..I think that most people don't believe in much at all, if you treat your human neighbor, animals and others rudely what does that say of your soul??? my hubby the most peaceful man and human I have ever known our child so sweet and peaceful I find the more religious and this and that the more Intolerant and nasty, just my opinion, to me organized religions fail the people yes they do, they are not tolerant and peaceful and helpful..why shove one's faith down the throast of another? I see no peace in that, so i stay away from church and pray each day and chant in the early morning for help with my life and my families too!

  6. I don't believe that God cares too much what happens in a building, but is more concerned in what is inside our hearts!

I made my peace with the Lord a long time ago, and still get frowned at for not "attending" a service at a building!

    To each his own!
