Workers' Paradise

I've been hearing the same complaints from workers. Doesn't matter if they are in the private or public sector.

These are people who are good at their jobs and hard workers, but are feeling incredible job stress. The thing that's really bugging them is that they can't do their jobs well. Between personnel cutbacks and stupid rules, their jobs are now impossible to do. No matter how hard they work, people are going to be unhappy.

People like that aren't use to failure. They've always gone the extra mile. Well now there are too many extra miles. Some things can be stretched only so far. They've become aware that the head office doesn't care about the work or the workers.

People are leaving. These aren't low paying jobs either. Some of them are well into 6 figures. Those who can are taking early retirement. Others are quiting and taking lower paying jobs, but with more normal expectations. A few are trying to medicate their problems away.

The ones who are staying are those who never did good work and don't care. They've gotten used to people being unhappy.

So the next time you have lousy service from a business or government agency, you'll know why.

  1. Those are the exact reasons I retired.

  2. You really nailed it especially with the “The ones who are staying are those who never did good work and don't care”, is one of the reasons companies shift high paying or difficult jobs off-shore.
I’m at the point of leaving my profession permanently probably in the next few weeks because it has become overloaded with government regulations. I’m an engineer and design and manufacture medical devices and surgical instruments. What just a few years ago took one engineer 3 months to complete the regulatory requirements now takes three engineers the same 3 month period! I’m talking about thousands of pages of nonsense!

    1. A friend of mine is a firearms engineer. He rarely mentions spending any time on government regulations. Make you wonder, doesn't it?

  3. That is what is ruining our country. Too many people who don't know anything or give a damn are the ones in charge. Common sense is long gone.

  4. I think you've nailed it as well. Employment 'benefits' are waaay more complicated (especially insurance, which is why most of the people I know will NOT retire early - too expensive to pay out of pocket!) I'm a CAD technician for an architect, I love the job but the regulations for building a building up to 'The Code' is getting out of hand.

Contractors expect much more information and want to solve every day problems that in older times, they handled themselves - they lived it for crying out loud.

I'm old enough to have started out on the boards (drafting table, parallel bar, triangles, scales) and can testify that the computer has sped things up, but you make far more changes and adjustments then the old days. So time wise, about the same amount.

    1. Drafting was a regular part of my high school back in the 70s. My high school drafting class was better equipped (and taught!) then the course I took in college. Did not go down that road in the end, but I remember doing it with paper and pencil.

Sad to see what the profession has become.

  5. My Dad told me that no matter how meanial the jog was or how small it was, always do the best job you can. I have always lived by those words and my customers appreciated it.

    1. Fine words to live by. As a self employed person, you could actually live by them. Imagine working at a place that made that impossible? You'd be unhappy and stressed, I bet.
