When a prepper comes to visit

A prepper friend of mine finally came over to my house for a visit. He said it’s such a relief to talk to someone who doesn’t think he’s crazy. The day was beautiful. We sat out on the deck, drinking coffee and swapping tales. I think we each learned a few things from each other.

I’m one of only a handful of people who know his bug out location. Circumstances have him staying in town right now, but it not a good place to weather trouble. One of the things we discussed was different ways of staying in touch. When the phones and the Internet go down, some other form of communication will be needed.

Another nice thing about having a prepper visit is the gifts they bring: canned goods, rice, seeds and ammo. It was a nice gesture; one only another prepper can appreciate.

  1. Your last comment is one that I have been thinking on lately. With christmas coming up I have thought about giving some small prepper starter kits to loved ones. I am wondering if that is a waste of time and resources though.

  2. You are lucky having a prepper friend, the acquaintances I have around me do not seem to grasp what is going on all around them. All of them seem to have bought the Patriot Act line of 'Its for the country's safety', yada yada yada.

One of them commented that if the economy crashed, she would come to my house - yikes! Sorry, I only help those who want to help themselves.

  3. Isn't it a fact...thank the good Lord I have a group of 'like minded' friends and our fireside chats are a huge pleasure indeed. It's nice to know you are not alone in this world.

  4. Morning to you. Good post. About the communications, you might consider old HAM radios. Amateur radio's going away as the old hams die off or get too old to hear. If you have a local Yahoo Free Cycle group you can probably pick up as many old transmitteers and recievers as you want for nothing, or check out Craig's list for them cheap.

For your purposes you probably would be wasting your time getting a license from the FCC. There ought to be a lot of older mobile units out there, also.

    Good luck. Jules

  5. I am an old HAM and highly recommend it. Get a license, it is so easy now, not like way back when I got my ticket.

  6. Ham might be the way to go. We have some tests planned for other communication methods.
