Will the checks stop?

With no end to the government shutdown in sight, and the October 17th debt ceiling fast approaching, people are getting worried. Obama has raised the possibility that Social Security checks might not go out. That would get interesting.

As luck would have it, by the 17th I should be visiting my dad at his retirement park. If things are not settled before then, I'll be around a lot of angry old people.

Under normal political conditions that would not be allowed to happen. Old people vote. They also have pretty good lobbies. Usually that's enough to keep the checks flowing. These are not normal times. Politicians are much more concerned about ideologies than the good of the country.

My very own lovely wife is on a SS disability. Her check is almost half of our income. What would we do if that was cut off? How would that affect our travel plans?

Most likely we'd go sailing anyway. However, it would affect how we'd travel. Forget about spending a lot of time at marinas and dock side restaurants. Rice and fish would be a big part of our diet, cooked on the boat. There are a lot of things to do and see that don't cost much money. Reading good books on a beach somewhere isn't too hard to take.

Maybe that's the wise thing to do. Head out to sea until the whole thing blows over. Of course, that's pretty good advice for just about anything from personal troubles to a full blown zombie Apocalypse.

  1. Hmmm......I don't recall ever hearing of a movie where zombies swim, but I wouldn't know, since I never watch them. (I'm kinda snooty that way.) ;-)

    1. Police states come into being a little bit at a time. Before you know it, that's what you've got.

  3. Let's face it, Hermit, this is a police state. I sincerely doubt the Aristocracy would allow the checks to stop. We SS recipients, like Sixbears said, are a huge voting block.

    1. Machiavelli said that to take over a country you leave the outward forms of government but change how things really work.

  4. Might be a huge voting block , but the vote would still be divided along the same lines. Changing nothing !

Tho most of us don't have many excess FRN's....

    1. Maybe they'd at least agree that they are all being robbed.

  5. Washington always threatens Social Security may be in jeopardy. How come they NEVER say welfare EBT cards will be in jeopardy?

  6. Good question. I can't think of a convincing answer.

  7. The checks will flow, the viscosity of SS spending in the economy is huge. The loss of 25 to 30% of consumer spending for even a month would be the same as a default on our debt.

  8. If someone more savvy than I can google "143 year old law" there was an article on MSN homepage about that law that saws they have to pay SS. It also says that in the event of a shutdow the pres cannot write checks without congressional approval except for military, emergencies life threatening things like maybe a natural disaster. The law has been amended about 14 times. Interesting read.

Of course Obammy would never violate a law of the Old outdated Constitution thing.....Get your beans and bullets in order folks.

  9. America is all about letting insurance companies make obscene amount of money on ourhealth care.As we fightabout health care.It shouldn't be called.Health care but called Insurance Care. They laugh all the way to bank.
Look at Canada our states are seeing thatthe pharmaceutical get to charge obscene prices. They want to buy from foreign pharmacies to savemoney but the Federal Judges say you cant do that to protect their big money pharmaceutical companies that pays their Senators. Insurance and pharmaceutical compamies laught all the way to the bank. Its not Obama Care its Insurance care.Insurane is about stealing money along with no accountability bu pharmaceutical companies or
    The doctors that they own.
