Sea friends and land friends

Over the weekend my lovely wife and I connected with some old friends from Maine. We've known them forever. Together we've have a lot of adventures like backpacking trips and wilderness canoe camping. One of the reasons we come back to New England is our connection to our old friends.

However, as much as we've enjoyed our adventures together over the years, we just can't convince them to join us on our sailing trips in southern waters. Day trips on the sailboat up north are fine, but we can't get them south in the winter. Apparently we've gone where they won't follow.

That's fine, really. People have their own lives. Not everyone wants to bum around the coast in small boats. In fact, it doesn't look very likely that any of our friends will turn into coastal sailors. That doesn't mean we like them any less. What it does mean is that we just won't see them half the year.

One the other hand, there are plenty of people out on the water already. Most of them are pretty friendly.

  1. I like reading about your travels during the winter. Years ago before life got in the way, we were going to build our own boat and live on it. I sill have the plans somewhere. It sounded like a pretty good life to me.

  2. Loved having all our boats over the years and loved taking trips with them. But Hubby I and couldn't imagine living on one for months at a time. Guess we are land lubbers at heart! But it's nice to know you meet like minded, friendly people on your travels.

    1. A lot of people tell me they'd need more time away from their spouse than we get.

  3. I almost bought a "live aboard" boat. I told the guy I would take it, we shook hands, and told him I would get the money the next day. Went back the next day and he had already sold it. Nice guy!!!

    1. Life might have taken a completely different direction. Ever think about the road not taken?

    2. Many times I've wondered about the road not taken. However, it would likely not have taken me to where I'm at and where I'm at is good. Also, I make new friends all the time while keeping the good ones from the past.

    3. There's so many different things to experience in life and only so much time. It's a shame so many people waste time doing things they hate.

The wonderful thing about friends is that you don't have to get rid of the old ones when making new.

  4. I love the sea my hubs not so much, so it would be only me, our only goes on cruises on working fish ships actually, her friends are bioligists and she gets a real taste of global warming and how Alaska is really doing and the pacific ocean, she likes amenities so she would not live on one for that long..I on the other hand could be a deck hand and never leave, it is just the soothing sounds of the sea that gets to me, no hassles and loads of times after work to read and relax..I love your blog, I admire how you are off the grid and don't anyone anything much at all..it is amazing and wonderful living life the way & your lovely wife want to! ciao!

  5. I meant to say don't owe anyone much if at all, most people run after money only to find it is not all that and a bag of chips, sure it is nice to have some comforts but in my opinion it overtakes the true meaning of really living and it is not working 80 hours a week for mean spirited yahoos who only think of themselves and what you can do to kiss their a--s...no not the life I could ever do, we make do with what we have & that is that..we don't run after money, we help people who are starving and enjoy the few weeks of sunshine we ever get, we got almost 75 yesterday and glorious sun, I weeded the tulips and my husband cultivated the daffy's and brought me a huge purple hyacinth bouquet it was spectacular!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sunny today! Yeah and more Yeah!
