Salvage

The salvage company called today. The boat, or what's left of it, is at his facility up on slings. I signed it over for salvage, but he's allowing me a chance to find personal items. He said he found my computer bag. I doubt if the computer is still good, but there were other things in that bag that I could use.

There's really nothing left to the boat. Even the outboard is seized. Salt water takes its toll. It's being disposed of on Monday.

I've been dealing with banks and insurance companies today. We also returned the rental car to Avis. That's a story in itself, but I'm going to wait to see how that turns out before blogging about it.

One nice thing is that my lovely wife found her favorite piece of jewelry in her purse. Since the rest of her shiny stuff is missing it really cheered her up. Sometimes it's the small things.

I've no regrets. We had some good experiences. No one got hurt.

  1. I'm still stunned! Happy to read no one was badly injured, but still, what a bummer.

  2. Wow. Stunned by the news but love your attitude to it all. You're all still breathing, your dearest kept some bling and you have a kicking story for the fireside. Life is the journey that you make of it and how you respond to the choices and challenges along the way. I hope that you can keep boating and adventuring in to the future...after a well earned rest.

    1. We will take some time to R&R then consider our options. Good thing it happened after we had weeks of exercise and healthy living under our belts. I'm in the best condition I've been in months and needed all my strength to get us safely off the boat.

  3. Away from the computer a couple of days and I come back to this! What an adventure to tell the grand kids Sixbears. I am glad no one was hurt. It is all just stuff and what is important is still alive and kicking. This is good. All the best. Joel, from Suffolk. Uk

  4. Sixbears,

Well, if attitude can truly help a person get through a bad situation, yours seems to be about the best anyone could expect. I imagine it will fluctuate as time goes by, so cut yourself some slack if you're not always the poster boy for positive mental attitude.

You said, "he's allowing me a chance to find personal items".

Just trying to learn something here -- wouldn't the boat owner always have the right to salvage before anyone else?

    1. I am unsure of the legal issues involved, but I did sign the boat away to him while it was upside down blocking the channel.

  5. I guess it is time to move on to something bigger and better. . . or not.

    1. Exactly -- like maybe a triloboat. Would seem to fit the bill and might be a bit more tolerant of groundings for those who like gunkholing and so are destined to be in this situation at one time or another.

  7. Or look at a catamaran! Shoal draft. such as the wharrham tiki. I had one of them and they are marvellous sea boats. I am not into the man as a guru. But I like his boats.

  8. I know its hindsight. But would a depth finder work to warn you early enough that shallow water was approaching fast? Yes I am guessing, but think that if you could have had this happen, why is it not happening to more folks. Given currents and the way storms move the underwater material am surprised this does not happen more often.

  9. WoW! Read today's post first and stopped after the first sentence because clearly I had missed a post or two! What a story! SO GLAD you all are OK! Several thoughts. 1. So bummed your winter boating came to a short end. 2. How great that you got help from some awesome people who let you stay the night. 3. Life is so much better when walking through it with a positive attitude :) 4. I'm sure you guys will be better for the whole experience. Take care!

  10. Well, once all the turmoil with insurance companies and the salvage and all are over, I hope you and your wife can rest some and catch your breath. I would think this whole thing has been hard on your nerves.

  11. That last sentence is the important part.
