Tools and Projects

I did not think it possible, but it's happened. I've actually started to miss home construction products. There aren't enough tools and materials in the van to keep me occupied. There's a lot of stuff to do back home: water heater, deck, flooring, furnace repair, chimney cleaning -and so on and so on. There's a broken buried water line that needs attending. The trail to the beach needs to be totally redone, maybe even rerouted. I'm going to make some trips to the dump and haul a lot of stuff away. Over the last few months my lovely wife and I have put together quite a list.

There are also a lot of boat upgrades I want to do. Last year I started to race the snow to get my boat trailer repaired. As it turned out, we decided not to trailer the boat this winter. All that last minute hustle wasn't necessary. On the bright side, that's one less thing for me to deal with.

Of course, we are still actively looking for a bigger trailer sailor. If we buy one, no doubt there will be things that need repair and upgrades. Even new boats have issues. Older ones, ones in my price range, certainly do.

Then there's a 1974 KZ-900 motorcycle sitting in my basement in pieces. I've all the parts I need to put it back together. The project came to a screeching halt when my leg got injured.

With so much on my “to do” list, I'd better hit the ground running when we get home. It sure will feel good to put some of those projects behind me. Vacation has been fun, but fixing and building stuff is fun too.

Then we've got to find some time to play. All work and no play makes Sixbears a dull lad.

  1. Enjoy the sun while you can. The projects will be there when you go back home. I think it's still pretty cold up there.

    1. It's still cold, but warm enough to sort out a few things anyway. Missing the tribe.

  2. Six I don't want to sound like a stick in the mud. Your almost 60 there are things that need done that you can still do but may not be able to do in 5 or 10 years down the road. Get home squared away for old age and retirement. Then run away from it and have fun!

    1. Just turned 60 a couple weeks ago. You've got a point. My leg injury really set me back last year. Better take care of the big projects while they are still fun to do.

  3. Totally agree with Gary. This trip to Ireland and Great Britain has certainly shown me the difference a few years a nd less every can do. HAd to cut sightseeing short several times cause 77 year old hubby is showing signs of age I've never seen. Time to get home and appreciate what we have within driving distance in the good old USA.

    1. Yeah, the clock is running. I'd better get a few more things ticked off my list before they get any harder to do.

  4. i always tell young people if they want to hike through europe or white water raft do it now before having a family.
retirement is not the time for that physical stuff.
retirement is for hiking around the neighborhood or taking a cruise on a riverboat, with dinner and dancing.
    and gary is spot on.
get the house ready with bathroom doors wide enough for a wheelchair, a walk in bathtub, lever handles on faucets, and convert a main floor room to a bedroom suite with accessible bathroom so stairs don't force you out of your home.

we go to a church built by young people about 100 years ago. you should see the amount of stairs!
so we have members who can get to church and take part but don't because of stairs.

    1. My wife pushed hard to get an elevator put in at her church. One of the people who were strongly against it now has to use it.

Old ain't dead. Still going to do what I can before I have to slow down too much.
