The Slow Heal

My leg infection is taking its own sweet time to clear up. If it doesn't show faster improvement in a couple days, the doctor will hear from me again. Right now they itch like crazy. Of course, they weren't bad all day long. It's only when I'm trying to sleep that they act up.

I've been pretty good about following doctor's orders, with one exception. He recommended I do more walking and I haven't been. In my defense when it's raining buckets at 37 degrees it's not nice walking weather. When the rain stopped my lovely wife and were in a hurry finish outside chores. To top it all off, we just received about a foot of snow.

To be fair there's still time for the wounds to heal within the time period the doctor expected. Two years ago, with a similar infection, they didn't seem to be healing. Then over the period of a couple days they cleared right up. Here's hoping.

Having no insurance, the cost is of no small concern too. So far I've received three out of five expected bills. My guess is that my current expensive is about $1100. As bad as that is, that's not much more than insurance would have cost me for one month, but with a $6000 deductible. Even worse, paying out of pocket, they give me a 40% discount. Our medical insurance system is messed up.

I've a credit card with no balance on it. The card is offering a 12 month no interest period. It might be a good idea to put some of my medical expenses on that card. That way some bills could be put off until after Christmas.

At any rate, I'm staying on top of this and will follow through until completely healed. Once the ibuprofen kicks in I'm going back to bed for more sleep.

  1. I'm sure you don't want to overdo the ibuprofen, either, so your sort of darned if you do and darned if you don't. Said a prayer for you.

    1. Hey Georges! Thanks for the prayers. Ibuprofen is not a long term solution. I know it's not good for me, but neither is not getting any sleep. At any rate, I'm out there shoveling this morning, as someone has to do it.

  2. ya know sixbears, I've been watching this and I finally want to say this, don't know if it will help. I had an infected left foot big toe, started as a small scratch. Would not heal. antibiotics and doctors. Finally discovered I had low blood pressure in my left leg and not diabetic. Lost the toe and several bypasses later I'm doing better.

    1. Thank you Franklin. I am not diabetic, but you are right. There could be other circulation problems. That's something to keep in mind the next time I see a doctor. Sorry you lost the toe, but glad you are doing better.

  3. I understand Tai Chi can be substituted for some walking. That can be done indoors in inclement weather.

    1. Good advice. I used to love doing Tai Chi years ago, but nobody teaches it around here anymore. Maybe I should see about clearing some space and doing it at home. It will take some research as I don't remember a good bit of it.

  4. I do a lot of walking. I walk from the bed to the breakfast table in the morning. Then I walk to my rocker/recliner for the rest of the day, then I walk back to bed. Dang, all that waking wears me out. . .

  5. Maybe you need something that "moves" you. I have a "swing" machine which stimulates lymph flow and oxygen. You could explore the various types of machine and ask your doctor about it. It beats trying to walk and slipping on the ice. This is a low end one on Amazon. 6. Just saying, I am big proponent of essential oils. What are ancestors used before advent anti-biotics. Research it..clove oil and lavender to start. Clears up infections and soothes/helps stimulate healing.
and echinacea to help immune system...

    1. Actually, normally alternative medicine works pretty good for me, but this time I let it get too far before treating. My fault for not taking better care of myself when this all first started.

    1. Calling the doctor's office as soon as they open this morning. This has gone on for too long.
