I was talking to a guy who runs some cattle. We met at the farmers' market and he was wondering what local hamburg was going for. That would be $9/pound or $32 for four pounds. It's pricey, but the quality is absolutely top notch. The taste difference is like day and night.
The cattle guy said he wished it was $20/pound as he's in the business of selling it. He said last year beef on the hoof was going for $2/pound. At that price all the cattle guys felt they were getting rich. Now it's going for $3/pound.
Good thing I have a lot of beans and rice. If the price goes too high I'll be treating beef the way Asians do, as a flavoring.

Given the quality of most grocery beef these days I'll pass anyway. Fish and poultry is better .
ReplyDeleteIndeed.
Delete6 Bears do you do a weekly bean pot yet? A great way to get your bowels used to beans and rice and reduces the amount of that prime beef hamburger in most dishes.
ReplyDeleteWhite beans are mild flavored and can be pureed to add to spaghetti-lasagna sauce for bulk and protein in a very acceptable manner.
Eat what you store stuff :-)
A lot of folks will be poorly served by the "Emergency Foods" they have bought (cough "wise" cough) as even the best stuff Mt House camping food portions are a tad inadequate.
Failure to prepare is going to make a lot of otherwise decent but almost unknown neighbors into real trouble when "Daddy, I'm HUNGRY" becomes the song of the land.
I do beans all the time. In an emergency it's not the time to get used to different foods.
DeleteCan't afford the luxury of beef these days, chicken, beans, veggies, and a mess of fruit is what sustains us these days. It's better for us anyways.
ReplyDeleteTrue enough. I'm thinking venison will be worth the effort this year.
DeleteI love venison. Mix some berries in, roast slow. Bake a potato, maybe carrot. Yum..
DeleteOk, Boomer.
ReplyDeleteSigh the anon comments from folks that seem to think meat comes from Styrofoam and shrink-wrapped factories. They show their keyboard excellence with a tired "Ok Boomer" insult.
ReplyDeleteMy garden efforts sometimes generate more meat than veggie calories. Just add a tad of personal (non-keyboard) violence and knife work.
Reading these comments is making me, HUNGRY... I can't see some cheffy types here. Don't mind If I steal some of your ideas. 80)
