Happy Thanksgiving

It's not about the dinner. It's about taking a day to be thankful and grateful for all the good things we've been given in life. The more spiritually advanced may even be thankful for the hard times because it can make us stronger. (Not too sure where I fit in there)

I hope everyone gets to spend some time with friends, family or kind strangers.

My life is full of things to be thankful for. I'm doing my best to not let temporary trials diminish that fact.

Please don't cut the day short with Christmas shopping. One holiday at a time please. Also, if nobody went shopping on Thanksgiving, no store would make their workers come in. Don't be that person who gives a store economic incentive to deprive their workers of a holiday.

There are jobs that must go on: police, fire, EMS, hospital employees, and everybody out there who keeps the roads open and the lights on. I'm grateful for their sacrifice. For all those who keep civilization functioning, I salute you.

I'm also grateful for my blog readers. I'm lucky to have such a nice group of people following my scribblings.

Is this where you expected to be?

My lovely wife and I were enjoying our morning coffee’s while sitting out in the sun. She asked me if this is where I expected to be way back when I was growing up.

“Yeah, pretty much,” I said, “although there are plenty of things that are bonus.”

It’s better than expected as there some wonderful things that happened in my life that I never even dreamed of.

That’s not to say the road was straight. There brushes with death, financial ruin, family issues -a whole laundry list of trials. In spite of it all, here I am pretty much where I hoped to be. Happily married with a good family, living where I want to live.

That’s not to say it couldn’t all go away tomorrow. That’s the nature of life. There are no happily ever afters. Even the best lives eventually end.

However, once in a while, it’s good to reflect and be grateful for our blessings. Then it’s time to wash those coffee cups and the rest of the breakfast dishes. Life goes on.

Doom on vacation

Now I know the world in general is in serious do do. Storms are coming. The economy's false recovery hasn't done Jack -because it's false, duh. Sabers are being rattled all over the world. The Gulf of Mexico is floating on a big pool of oil. (That's what BP stands for, Big Pool.)

Yes, yes yes, I could make a big list and still not list them all.

Not going to do that.

My wife got some good news from the doctor. In short, she doesn't have the terrible disease that earlier tests indicated she might have. Big relief here. All my problems that concern things and stuff don't really matter.

To top it off, right now, the weather's been so darn nice that I can't help but smile. Took a canoe out on the lake and soaked in the sun.

One of the life lessons I've learned is to be thankful and grateful for the good times.
