Lunatics

2:30 AM. The dog gets restless and wants to go out. My lovely wife gets up to let her out. By then my daughter and granddaughter are both awake.

For my part, I’m heroically doing my best to resume my journey though dream land.

Once the dog is out, she barks like crazy. There’s a man out in the road. My wife thinks he’s drunk and she manages to call the dog back in.

Of course, by then I’m up. I wander up and down the road, looking to see if anything is out of order. The guy is long gone. By the light of the moon I can see quite a ways down the road. I check all the cars with a flashlight to see if anyone is hiding in them. All clear.

After I come back in, everyone goes back to bed, except me. I sit alone in the quiet dark house, listening, listening. At the break of dawn I finally head off to bed for a few more hours sleep.

It was a warm night, on a holiday weekend. People are partying at their camps and at the campground. A drunk wandering around in the middle of the night really should not be a surprise. Still, my security sucks. The cars were unlocked. Heck, even the front door was unlocked. Only the dog was on the ball. It did get me thinking -I’ve got to do better.

  1. Yup. Best to play it safe. I'm remembering a song by The Doors right now. You may know the one.

  3. As always ,Isolation is the key to security.
Dogs Bark ! Sometimes not a good thing...
Strength in numbers is the key along with an isolation aspect.

    1. Right. Minor incident, but woke me up in more ways than one.

  5. You can't get a better alarm system than a dog or two or three. Ours are not big, but when all of them start barking at once, an intruder would think twice and they do let me know something is not right.

  7. Well, ya cain't just whip out the old double barrel an' start shoot'n. That noise ya heard, what started the hounds a bark'n, could be your neighbors cow. Don't do no good to roll up the winders and lock the doors. A real thief is gonna break 'em. Ya cain't be secure against these things.
Ya can be prepared though. You know, sit up all night sip'n on a jug of cider an' peek'n out the winders....stuff like that ya know.
I'm think'n security of mind is the best security now a days. The other stuff, locked doors, winders, razor wire...stuff like that, is just a deterrent. Oh yeah, lights work.

  8. When we let our guard down something will occur to wise us up. Fortunately for you and yours, there was no damage done.

Here, I've been convinced someone walks through our yard at night. George has always brushed that off, saying I'm imagining it. A while back I stuck a few nails in the ground pointy side up along the route I'd seen him take - diagonal jog across back corner of our yard toward our shed. It's not an area we drive through so no worry about flat tires. Sure enough, two nights later we both heard cussing and yelping. Someone in the neighborhood is walking around with a limp and cussing cause he needed a tetanus shot!

    1. Florida buddy of mine had two German shepards trained to chase intruders into the thorn bushes. He liked to hear them curse.

  9. Peace of mind is of paramount importance!

Take a hard look at the security in place and you'll know what to do.

Now, go get some rest, buddy!

    1. Doing fine.

I need something between nothing and shooting. Have a few ideas.

  10. I recommend a Streamlight and a small handgun kept under your pillow or, as in my case, the drawer beside the bed. Assuming bouncing bettys, concertina wire and claymore mines are out.

  11. I found these on Amazon...only $34 for starter kit and like $22 for additional sensors. Set one up at the front drive gate, another near the tool shed/shop...and a third at a distant carport/lean-to shed. Easy to set up and works great. Wireless range up to 800' they say.
