Big city service

My local credit union was bought out by a larger financial institution. I gave them a chance, but within two weeks I've had to deal with a half dozen things that made banking a whole lot less friendly. It varies from my favorite people being laid off to annoying little hidden charges. Even phone calls are now routed through the main office where I used be able to call people directly.

The place has gone from being one of the top five companies to work for to a place where people are going part time because they hate work so much now.

My lovely wife and I were going to make some major financial changes. We've decided to wait until spring. There's no time to go bank shopping before our trip. In the mean time, I'm doing some other changes that will hold us until we get back. None of those changes will be with the “local” credit union. If I've got to deal with a rude faceless corporation, might as well go for the best rates.

  1. I feel your pain.when i had my gas station the bank i was using started a cash handling fee.If i deposited over 5000 a month in cash they wanted a quarter persent to take my cash.A good bank is getting hard to find.you may want to have one for your check and a differant one for the wife.My wife has one for our personal use and i have one just for bill payments.{funny how she set that up}.

    1. A fee for handling cash? Isn't that one of the things we just assumed a bank would do? As part of their job?

  2. I haven't used a "Bank" for a long, long time. Don't miss them a bit!

  3. I used to work for a guy that used no banks, had no loans and paid by money order, when he couldn't use cash. He invested his money in material goods that held their value.

    1. A friend of mine was like that, from a family that always lived that way. Then one day he wanted to buy a new tractor on credit and discovered what not having a credit rating was like.

  4. Gotta love the timing of that.
Of course, there is no time like the present for assimilating life forms for The Borg.

  5. The way of the world eh. Faceless organisations who take no responsibility for their actions or lack of action...

    1. Sadly yes. I was against the merger, but it went forward anyway. I'm 100% sure a handful of people made a lot of money on it.

    2. Ya, comes from our sailing days. We would hide stashes of $500 in various places through out the boat, thinking that if robbed they wouldn't get it all.
Trouble was sometimes we'd forget where they all were lol.
I'll never forget finding the $500 stashed behind the porthole mirror when we sold the boat. Lucky for us that my wife wanted to keep that mirror or the new owners would have gotten a nice surprise heh

    3. I remember that and think it's a good idea . . . as long as you remember your hidey holes.

  7. Maybe the big banks will get wiped out the next go round.

    1. Maybe a tiny computer glitch will collapse the whole house of cards.

  8. Can't beat a small, local bank versus the mega corps. I like seeing the same folks each week and having any issues addressed quickly right on the spot versus waiting on "corporate"...
