Finance and me

The world of finance and the world I live in don't overlap as much as they do in most people's lives. Money just doesn't interest me. I'm not trying to avoid it. However, seeking it is not one of my bigger past times.

That being said there are bills to pay -maybe not as many as most people, but bills none the less.

Back when we spent winters living on the road in a tent, our finances were simple. Over time they've gotten more complicated again. We were stopping at my dad's often enough that forwarding our mail there was enough of a solution. Now that we plan on spending a lot of time traveling on the boat, we needed to simplify things once more. Mail might not catch up to us for months, so that wouldn't work.

My lovely wife went into our local credit union and did the money thing. There used to be a pleasant receptionist who was welcoming and efficient. We'd talk to her and then get directed to the correct office. She's been replaced by a computer screen and a keyboard. We had to type in our names and checkmark what service we wanted. Eventually the person who handled what you wanted would wander into the lobby and collect you. We all miss the pleasant lady.

We were able to connect with the right person and he was able to do what we wanted. Our rates are lower and payment will be automatic. That's one less thing to worry about, assuming everything goes though the way it's supposed to.

It would be easier to live on a boat full time. Then all the payments, insurances, and taxes, and registrations associated with land life would go away. There were just be a boat to worry about. As it is, we have all the land stuff, and a boat to support.

It's much more fun to plan boat modifications and to get our gear in order. That's real to me. However, once in a while, I've got to do the financial stuff too, even though it's no fun at all.

  1. I have to say now that I'm learning how stuff really works in the finacial world I find it facinating. I'm on SSD and a little disabilty from the VA but in a way the challenge of getting the most from my money and doing all the things that many people say they can't do or it's impossible to to do at my income level is all the more satisfying.

  2. I think I'd find a new bank, or maybe a credit union.

  4. I hate finances. After Maam passed I unplugged just about everything in the house and restarted my small collection of solar and wind devices and brought the electrical expenses back into control. I disconnected the gas, and shut off any not mission critical water zones. As a result I now pay a full 1/3 of what she was paying monthly. I'm dumping this dump onto a cousin on labor day to get back to my old existence. A funny thing I found out about recently, is that due to my off the grid anywhere ideas, She never saw any increase in expenses after I moved in to help her after she got confined to a wheel chair. Too soon I'll be back off the grid with zero expenses with the exception of my dumb phone cell. I'm sure the state will find a way to get me back into the paydom bracket, as I hear they are going to start registration of small boats. Even kayaks and PDR's. I do hope to be living in another state by then. Keep on preaching about the frugal life, It's the only chance at having a life for our generation.
Some folks are born silver spoon in hand
Lord, don't they help themselves, oh
But when the taxman comes to the door
Lord, the house looks like a rummage sale, yes

    It ain't me, it ain't me, I ain't no millionaire's son, no
It ain't me, it ain't me; I ain't no fortunate one, no

    1. I was born with nothing and still have most of it.

Registration of small boats isn't being pushed in NH right now, but every state is looking for a way to squeeze more money out of us folks.

Might pay to be in a place where it's easy to slip back and forth across borders.

  6. I would change from that credit union in a new York minute, how rude!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! There just is a total lack of helpfulness anywhere, our local bank was bought out by a huge bank in another part of our state, they failed to tell most everyone, I held on or should I say we held on, but when one goes into the bank it is like a desert, lovely to look at no service..Our credit union is wonderful only thing of it is across a border and a lot of miles at over $4.00 a gallon gas it is a bitch to get to but we manage..I feel for those 16 who combined their money to pool it and one one/third of the powerball this past Wednesday, I don't think they will be working in that garage much longer, I certainly would not they should get a couple of million to arrange their life oh, my God!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We are not running after money, we enjoy the simple things in life, money really cannot buy a person happiness...Have a wonderful time with your boat, I read your blog daily and get a big kick out of how frugal and real you are, few people are anymore! Ciao!!!

    1. Our local credit union combined with a much bigger one. I'm going to see how our business with them sorts itself it out and go from there.

We do miss the people they let go, but they did keep a few people we get along with. Time will tell.

      Glad you enjoy the blog.
