April showers bring -snow later in the day

At least that's what's been going on around these parts. May flowers seem a long way off. I'm measuring the size of my woodpile and comparing it to the long range weather forecast. I'll be surprised if I'm not foraging firewood to get through the heating season. It's not a crisis, but another annoyance.

Outdoor projects have been put on hold.

It's discouraging, but in the big scheme of things I don't have much to complain about. The house is warm, there's plenty of coffee and good books. This old bear should just hibernate a bit longer.

  1. Funny you posted about firewood today.I spent the afternoon hauling and stacking about 2/3 of a cord. Not for heating but for BBQ a friend lost a peacan tree in a wind storm last week.He is going to cut anouther next month ill get it to.A nice stack but when it dries going to be a lot of spliting.Hope your weather warms so you have time to find free wood.

    1. I've plenty of storm downed wood within walking distance, so I'll be fine. I bet pecan makes good BBQ. Waste not, want not.

  2. There is nothing as satisfying as a big woodpile... Autumn is upon us here in New Zealand and I'm eyeing the wood I will collect to keep me warm. My wood caches are small though. Soon, part of each day will be spent in the collection of the fuel to keep me warm and my cooktop cooking... I do love the winter just to have the fire going... oh the smell of the wood... I must go, I'm getting emotional...

    1. Even at the end of the heating season, the romance of wood has faded only a little.

    1. At least the rain knocked the snow pack down a bit. It's not unusual to get snow in early May.

  4. We have plenty of wind fall wood here. But, when the temps are warm enough to gather it my work is calling me in. Yesterday, I was mixing plaster outside for a repair job and the temperature dropped into the high thirties. When I got the mix into the warm house it was ready to set right off. I figure it will be 2 more weeks before the warm temps are the rule rather than the exception.

    1. Got to take those jobs when they are available. Usually the ice leaves the lake here around the 21st of April. Sometimes the change is sudden.

  5. Sounds like an ideal time to curl up with a good book, fresh coffee and nice, warm fire!
