Food Shortages

Recently I received an unexpected check in the mail. Within twenty-four hours I’d turned all it into food. If you’ve got anything at all to spare I’d recommend you stock up. There are food shortages on the way. Of course, I might be wrong about that, but you’ll eventually eat that food anyway.

Forget about buying special survival foods like MREs. Prices have gone through the roof and delivery times are long. Get regular canned and dry goods for storage. Stock on up spices. That’s one of the things added to my pantry. When you’ve got a lot of beans and rice being able to spice them in different ways sure makes life better.

Don’t rely upon hunting. During the Great Depression the woods were pretty much cleaned out of anything edible. Game laws were ignored because that’s what hungry people do. I’m still doing some hunting, but I’m not relying on it. If you do plan on hunting I hope you already have your ammo as there’s nothing in the gun stores. Locally even 30-30 is sold out.

  1. amelia county hunt club goes back a hundred and fifty years. every year the wrote the highlight of the season on their wall. in 1935 they wrote "saw deer track, put dogs on it." same area in 1970 my grandpa danced a jig when he found a turkey track. now you can't drive or walk without nearly hitting dear, bear, or turkey. depression emptied the woods, took it til now to recover. long time to be hungry.

    1. People have no idea how quickly wildlife can be wiped out. That's a valuable record the hunt club has.

  2. Good advice. Most people do not understand "JIT" (just in time) inventory. With limited stocking shelves will be empty in a couple days like the last time, only worse and may not be but minimally restocked for weeks.

  3. Another area to consider. Your body !
Get anything done now that needs tending to.
You'll not have the ability to run to the Drs after shtf. All of there supply line is also connected to that JIT supply line.

Been putting off , getting a hernia fixed because of the COVID. Finally got brave enough and went in yesterday to take care of it. Something as simple as a hernia , will flat kill your ass once medical care no longer exists.

    1. Glad you stopped putting that off. Trying to get the lovely wife to the dentist, but you know how that goes.

Stocked up vitamins and filled in the gaps of the med kits.

    3. There is something to be said for taking the meds to stay ahead of the pain. Now is the time you really need them. Be well.

  4. Not only will the wildlife go fast, but do you really want to be out where there's a bunch of people with no hunting experience are running around desperate for a shot at something? When I was a young (in the 60s) it was a big deal to see a deer, now they are everywhere. Even so, they wouldn't last long under heavy hunting, especially if people don't care if its fawn, doe, or buck, or what time of year it is. I wish I knew which blogger said those who will probably do best are those with garden (including saving own seeds), chickens, goats, and save the guns to protect those.

    1. When I was a kid my dad used to dress me head to toe in orange. Even so I was once shot at because some guy heard something. Yep, he was shooting at sounds.

    2. We bow hunters will fair a little better. Besides scaring off the wildlife, gunshots also announce your presence to other humans.
Traps will feed you much more effectively anyway and not burn up a bunch of calories chasing critters.

    3. I also have a powerful .22 pellet gun that's good for small game super quiet. In a survival situation, however, traps work best. I've rat traps that are murder on squirrels if needed. Cheap and easy. Also know more traditional trapping, but those snap traps are fun.
