Are Troopers Your Best Protection?

No.

Moving on.

Probably should say a bit more.

Law enforcement provides protection, but it’s not the best. More often than not they are more of an after the incident clean up crew. They will look into who killed you, but only rarely will they prevent it. Even the best responses to things like mass shooter incidents arrive after the bodies have already piled up. They may prevent victim number eleven but not victim number one.

So . . . Is your best protection a concealed carry gun? Well it is a protection. I’m going to discount that. That assumes you’ve trained, have the weapon on you, and have the mental fortitude to respond properly. That doesn’t mean you won’t get shot anyway. It just gives you a chance to shoot back.

In reality your best protection is a civil society. Ideally society pulls together and supports each other. Few people feel truly isolated with no way to address their issues. Mental issues are dealt with before they reach the high powered rifle in the bell tower stage. It’s not magic. Places all over the world fit that criteria.

So if you want to feel safe move to a place with a good sense of community. A place with decent wages, good health care, a strong education system and good services. Yes, they do exist -even in the US.

If you have to rely on cops to provide protection it’s too late. Any society with enough law enforcement to actually provide that level of control is one you probably don’t want to live in anyway. Police state anyone?

  1. Situational awareness is by far your best defense.
I used to have a concealed permit here in Floriduh. Ended up letting it expire. 1st because I rarely carried in public places and 2nd because I'm cheap and didn't think I should have to pay a fee to continue my constitutional right.
Here soon Floriduh is going to allow cc without license. I have mixed feelings about that, mainly because most city folks don't follow good gun safety rules and have little experience with carrying a weapon , let alone using one in extreme circumstances.
I expect the Stand your ground defence to be tested several times due to the new rules.
My strategy will be as it always HAS been in past.
Just try to avoid crowded places and don't do anything to piss off folks ...

    1. Never piss off old folks. Many have killed before and aren't afraid of dying.

NH has no cc license anymore. Nothing major happened with the change, but we are a fairly rural state and are a pretty civil one.

    2. Odd Factoid, NH is one of the most heavily armed states in the union. Population 1.35million.

Yet has less firearms related incidents (that include suicides and stuff not just violent crime) than the democrat owned for decades Atlanta population 500K.

It's not the availability of firearms, it's the Uncivil behaviors of the society.

  2. Spud said it right, Situational awareness is by far your best defense.

Even in the best neighborhoods trouble can show up. Something about societal mobility aka Cars and Gov.com bus tickets. (Yes, they still ship troublemakers "Elsewhere").

I'd also add to situational awareness is the willingness to step away from a situation when things "Feel Odd" as that de-escalation tactic works pretty well.

I've scars from ignoring that "Odd feeling", most of my debriefings of friends after a "Situation" they felt that "Odd Feeling" but ignored it until the knife or craziness came out.

I'll only stand my ground if it's my family that cannot get out of the situation and will try damn hard to get them out of the situation as soon as possible.

I've killed in the line of duty and don't want to again now that I'm retired.

Or as Ole Remus used to say (God rest his soul) "Don't be around people doing stupid things" and "Stay away from crowds".

    1. Being somewhere else is an excellent defense.

I see too many people using the stand your ground defense to shoot people that make them vaguely uncomfortable. Those laws will probably tighten up soon.

    2. A few adult pigs or a compost pit is useful with the 3 "S"'s.

If the law applied equally then Epstein's client list would be out and almost half of congress in prison for child rape and murder.

Maybe dueling should come back into law? Half the online bloggers would either get really good with a sword or pistol or learn to be less strident. eh?

      Don't worry 6 Bears you're a gentleman blogger.

  3. I teach this stuff for giggles. 1st lesson, "I'm old and know how to run away." 2nd lesson, "I'm old and know how to run away." I've been shot, don't like it much. Someone has promised to get my shooting skills back up to snuff... 80)
