Moving forward

After my leg started to heal up I decided to get an annoying ingrown toenail dealt with. I’m glad I did as it makes walking a lot more comfortable. That makes it easier to get back into condition. The followup at the foot doctor’s went well. In fact, she was surprised how well it healed as she herself had her doubts. A three month visit is scheduled and then she recommends a yearly visit.

My legs are still doing well. However, it’s one more thing I have to watch. Now I’m wearing long pants instead of shorts for leg protection. At least I’m not wearing hockey pads. . . yet. Who knows maybe I’ll end up with a pair of logger’s jeans with keval inserts. Since it was a fairly small injury that started the whole leg infection drama I’m cautious.

While in town I talked my mechanic about the Blazer. Turns out it was almost ready last week, but the wrong tires had been shipped to the shop. The new tires have finally come in. Since it’s in the shop anyway I’m having the alternator changed. There’s the very beginning of some bearing noise coming from it. Might as well fix it now rather than 500 miles down the road somewhere.

So all in all, life is good. It feels good to be moving forward again. That being said, I can’t just pick up where I left off. Maybe I had too much time to think about things. There’ s been the need to reassess my priorities. During the coming year there are a lot of things I’d like to accomplish and experience.

  1. Plans are good, but made to be changed.

    1. Too true. The best plan is to be ready to adjust to the new plan, then rinse and repeat.

    2. At least a plan is a starting point. For me, if I don't have some sort of plan to get moving, nothing much will happen on its own.

  2. Puttees work, and are somewhat fashionable depending on what era's clothes you are wearing.

So are snake legging or snake boots.

As to knee and shin pads, well, they make pants that have pockets for foam inserts, or you can make your own.

If you do make your own, the closed cell foam camping mats make great and cheap pads. Or you can go expensive and do D3O or other reactive foam. (Really, check out the reactive foam stuff they have out there. The modern world is weird and interesting.)

Glad you got your legs working. I am having to transition to long pants due to getting paper-skin (from my mom's side of the family. Good jeans to protect from Bad genes...)

    1. Motorcycle pants might be an option too. They make jeans that are armored against falls that look fairly normal.

  3. Having a limited sense of feeling in my lower legs has proven to be almost a daily occurrence of minor to even sometimes major injuries. Thankfully my immune system is working well still. Though I'm a huge fan of iodine...
Considering where we live , long pants suck.
I've found that situational awareness is the key to staying injury free.
In the bush , long pants and snake boots !
Always keep the extremities covered when in harsh environments. Gloves, shoes , eyes !

    1. I can't just shake off injuries like I used to. Now I have to try to avoid getting them in the first place.

  4. If you haven't done it yet, check the differential oil to see if it needs replacing. We recently replaced it in all three of our vehicles and the performance difference can be felt. Since your new truck will be used for towing, its worth it.

I used to heal from skin injuries quickly, but as I've aged, it takes longer. And it doesn't help that I often wear cut-offs when I'm not at work. I'm prediabetic so I really have to pay more attention to this.

    1. Good suggestion about the oil.

I'm not diabetic or even prediabetic, but have to act as if I am.
