Ever changing household

Nature abhors a vacuum?

Build it and they will come?

I'm looking for the words to decribe what having a house a bit bigger than my needs is like.

After the kids moved out the house seemed way too big. That situation didn't last all that long. They kept coming back, and sometimes bringing husbands or a child with them. That was fine. Happy to be there for them.

Well, for a number of years now the kids have been off on their own. Unless something really drastic happens they are pretty well set up.

My niece on the other hand. . .

Yep, new addition to the household. Happy to be here for her. She's in her 20s so it's not like I have to raise her. My lovely wife and I can just be our normal eccentric selves. I've no idea how long she's going to be here, but we haven't put any time limit.

In the mean time, it appears I have a built in dog and house sitter. That works.

Multi generational households are on the upswing in America. Considering how difficult things can be it only makes sense.

  1. Being in a position to help a family member is satisfying. Seeing same family member get on with their life because of the help more satisfying.
While multi generational homes make sense a home needs to be setup properly for it to work long term. The rich have the right idea its called a family compound. So says a grandpa that watch's cartoons in his boxers.:)

    1. Compounds make a lot of sense. Good mix of personal space and group connections.

  3. Like Gary says, it is great to be able to help someone, but a better feeling to see the one you helped get on with their own life on their own.

  4. My 23 yer old son lives with me most days when he comes home. I'm planning on building a 20x24 2 story garage and an apt upstairs. I think it will work for both of us. I charge him rent now which pays his phone, dog food, groceries, and a portion of the other bills. I love him but its stressfull living with him. Good Post.

    1. Thanks Nightshift!

A little distance is a good thing now and then. The apt. sounds like it should work out better. He'll be close, but you can all have some personal space.
